Name Origin
I believe it is a very old term to describe people with red hair. However, neither me or any of my immediate family have red hair!
Spellings & Pronunciations
Reddy, Ready, Reidy. It is pronounced the same as the word "ready" is. As in, "Your order is....READY, Mr. Reddie!" I hear it often, and always politely humor the person, even if it is the five thousandth time I've heard it.

I wouldn't call him famous per se, but he is fairly well-known in art circles around the world: my grandfather, MacIvor Reddie. His works are on microfiche at the Smithsonian, so he's at least that famous, I guess.
Early Reddies
These are the earliest records we have of the Reddie family.
Archibald - known to most as "Fergus" Reddie, was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 11, 1869. He was taught acting skills by an uncle, and eventually wound up as an acting coach, director and Professor of Public Speaking at Emerson, Valparaiso, and he University of Oregon. One of his students in Oregon was well-known character actor Edgar Buchanan, and he credited Fergus with giving him the acting bug, as well as the desire to abandon his studies in dentistry, to become an actor instead. Fergus wrote several plays, including one called "The Little Dog Laughed", and was often -almost always, in fact - in productions he directed at the colleges where he taught. Newspaper articles from the era portray him as an excellent Shakespearean actor, but also able to handle many other kinds of roles with ease. In later life, he was director and participant in many different theater groups in Pennsylvania and Boston, MA. I have some newspaper clippings that indicate he was also in stage productions at the Orpheum in Los Angeles in the 1920's. Fergus died from from cancer of the gall bladder in Los Angeles, CA on March 18, 1949.

My grandfather, MacIvor Reddie, with kittens. "Mac" was a fantastic artist and art educator. He was Vice President of the School of Practical Art in Boston for many years. He was once offered the position of President, but turned it down because he didn't want to stop teaching art, which he loved. Sadly, I never got to meet him, as he died before I was born. At lower right is my uncle David.
