I love this picture for a variety of reasons. Mac looks pleased with his work. This portrait of my father still hangs on the wall at my house, and there it will remain.

MacIvor Reddie with kittens
My grandfather, MacIvor Reddie, with kittens. "Mac" was a fantastic artist and art educator. He was Vice President of the School of Practical Art in Boston for many years. He was once offered the position of President, but turned it down because he didn't want to stop teaching art, which he loved. Sadly, I never got to meet him, as he died before I was born. At lower right is my uncle David.

Unknown people at Magoun house, Pembroke, MA
This picture came to me unlabeled, but these people are almost certainly some of my Magoun ancestors; either husband and wife or perhaps brother and sister. My great-great grandfather Henry Magoun built the very distinctive-looking house behind them. There are actually two similar houses that he built in Pembroke, MA in the latter half of the 19th century, and both still stand today.

Three of my favorite things in this world, all in one picture: Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy with a cat. This was taken on the set of the (excellent) silent short film, "The Finishing Touch."

Exeter, PA Train Wreck - May 12, 1899
The Times, Philadelphia PA front page, May 14, 1899. Coverage of the "Exeter Horror" train wreck of May 12, 1899 in Exeter, PA. My great-great grandfather - Charles Clay Leaf - was one of the victims. He was killed instantly; his friend in the seat next to him escaped with only minor injuries. Goes to show, you don't ever know...
Archibald Ferguson Reddie
Archibald - known to most as "Fergus" Reddie, was born in Philadelphia, PA on July 11, 1869. He was taught acting skills by an uncle, and eventually wound up as an acting coach, director and Professor of Public Speaking at Emerson, Valparaiso, and he University of Oregon. One of his students in Oregon was well-known character actor Edgar Buchanan, and he credited Fergus with giving him the acting bug, as well as the desire to abandon his studies in dentistry, to become an actor instead. Fergus wrote several plays, including one called "The Little Dog Laughed", and was often -almost always, in fact - in productions he directed at the colleges where he taught. Newspaper articles from the era portray him as an excellent Shakespearean actor, but also able to handle many other kinds of roles with ease. In later life, he was director and participant in many different theater groups in Pennsylvania and Boston, MA. I have some newspaper clippings that indicate he was also in stage productions at the Orpheum in Los Angeles in the 1920's. Fergus died from from cancer of the gall bladder in Los Angeles, CA on March 18, 1949.

Archibald Ferguson Reddie
This is my great-grandfather, Archibald Ferguson Reddie. He was a drama coach, Professor of Public Speaking at Emerson U., Valparaiso, and the University of Oregon, and actor/writer/director of stage plays. This picture says "Leaving Valparaiso" on the back, so I would place it in the 1910's.

A fantastic painting of the ship, "St. Louis" by my grandfather, MacIvor Reddie (1899-1966). As you can see, he was a great artist.
Eliza H. Cattell? Unknown woman.
Eliza H. Cattell? Unknown woman.
I have a strong hunch that this is my paternal great-grandmother, Eliza H. (Cattell) Reddie (either 1862/1865-1925). But none of my photos of this woman are labeled, so I can't be sure. This picture was almost certainly taken in Oregon, where she lived for some time.
Unknown Child - maybe Leaf, Reddie, or Cattell?
Unknown Child - maybe Leaf, Reddie, or Cattell?
This picture is in a family album of my Leaf, Reddie, and Cattell ancestors. Many photos aren't identified, and this is one of them. However, on back it says:

"Wenderoth, Taylor & Brown
912-914 Chestnut Street
Philadelphia
No. 50897"

In the unlikely event that anyone can identify this child, I would be very happy!
Elizabeth (Leaf) Magoun
Born in Pennsylvania, Elizabeth married Henry Norcross Magoun Jr. of Pembroke, MA on October 29, 1912 in Whitemarsh, PA. She died under mysterious (and very possibly nefarious) circumstances in May of 1918 at the age of 25.
