Early Santvoords

These are the earliest records we have of the Santvoord family.

Seymour was a little below medium height ( about 65-66 inches ) and was medium built. He sported a mustache for many years. He first wed on June 4,1884 in Troy, N.Y. to Virginia Shields and had 1 daughter. After Virginia's early death, he courted and wed Virginia's older sister, Caroline Hart Shields and had 6 children via her.( Partly because of the emotional experience in courting her older sister to be a stepmother to his oldest daughter, Seymour was protective of his daughters to make absolutely sure they were making right decisions in courting and deciding on spouses to be. ) Because of so many children and a housekeeper or more, he started having the mansion called Thirteen Gables built in the 1880s on the Furnace Grove property located east of Bennington, Vt. For recreation, he liked to hunt and fish. His main occupation was lawyer ( he was also a noted public speaker, which about 1930 he compiled noted addresses of his speeches into a book called Random Addresses ) and earned a high income which he needed for his large family. He was a 1878 graduate of Union College. He retired from the legal profession about 1937 when creeping paralysis ( later called Lou Gehrig's Disease ) began afflicting him. How it might have started ( maybe a fall? ) is unknown. But he was in a foul mood knowing what it was doing to him. During most of his adult life he was an affiliated Democrat. While he was a supporter of F.D.R. in the 1930s, some 30 years before that, he was a supporter of Theodore Roosevelt who was a Republican. Being of good Dutch descent meant a lot to him. An interesting trivial note on Seymour Van Santvoord and his grand daughter, Jean Virginia Campbell. Besides Having the same month and day of birth ( Dec. 17 ), both ( he in 1858 and she in 1920 ) were born on a Friday. The odds are at least 2,500 to one against that happening. But with Seymour and Jean, it did happen. Over the years, a series of books called Who's Who in America has Seymour Van Santvoord's biographical sketch included in an earlier edition joining that of his father, his oldest son George, and his great grandson in law, Howard Draft.
