Around the time he was married, he was described as being 5 feet 10.5 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds. He had brown eyes, red hair, and a "ruddy" complexion. He also wore glasses. He was working at Surface Transportation Company in Mount Vernon. Joseph was a veteran of World War II. He served in the United States Army from 1942 through 1945.
