Arthur was the youngest son of Richard Joseph Spedding and Barbara Ann Spedding.
The 1901 Census shows Richard to have been working as a commercial clerk, then aged 42. Barbara was 43.
In 1916, Richard and Barbara were living at 11 Chelmsford Road, Edgeley and, before that, had lived at 184 Turncroft Lane, Stockport.
Arthur had been a member of the congregation of St Mary's Parish Church and an active worker with the Church Lads' Brigade. He worked for Messrs Beyer, Peacock Ltd at their Gorton railway locomotive building works and enlisted in the army, at Stockport, around mid autumn of 1914.
He was killed in the Battle of the Somme – Capture of St Pierre Divion attack. Arthur's body was never found and identified and he is commemorated on the nearby Memorial to the Missing

It is my understanding that the Melsonby line has died out and the Gilling line continued with Francis Spedding 1722-1808 down to the present day and to our own family. Around 1900 an old box of family documents covering some 350 years was accidentally destroyed by fire, which would have taken us back to around 1550. I have spent the last 20 years researching the family and have come across no other present-day related Speddings. If you have Spedding connections with Gilling or Melsonby, please let me know.
As far as we know, we are not related to the Burnley/Batley branch but hey! you never know!!Nor do we seem to have connections to the Cumberland branch, though my instincts tell me that our ancestors may well have com from the Westmorland and Cumberland direction, asSpedding seems to have a Scandinavian origin.
Is anyone out there researching this family and thinks this potted history rings a bell? Please let me know.
