Man Of War with Ray Van Tassel: When we lived in Indianapolis, we attended the Kentucky Derby for 9 years. Mama & Dad were visiting us in 1945 and attended with us. Dad met his Holmes cousins from Kentucky where his father was born. Van wanted his photo taken with the famous retired race horse Man Of War. He got a photographer to go to Calumet Farms & had this picture taken. The stable had hardwood floors and was as clean as a house! My son Pieter took me to see the movie "Seabisket" last Sunday and we thought we would post this old photo.

Toni Ziegler, my son Jan, and myself at the Old Timers Reunion of North Lake Tahoe. Jan spent a lot of time at Ziegler's Coffee Shop in Kings Beach, CA. Toni's son Richard was one of Jan's friends in High School. It was held at the Tahoe Biltmore at Crystal Bay, NV. We visited with many friends and there were several we hadn't seen in years. Pieter, Jan, & I stayed at a cabin in Tahoe Vista with my dog Cha Chee. In 1998, Pieter & Jan attended and were able to stay in a cabin at our old resort, The Woods.
My sons, Pieter and Jan at the wedding of Jan's son, Jonathan, to Jennifer at the Karl Strauss Brewery Gardens in San Diego. It was a big event for our family and I was sorry that I didn't feel up to the long flight from Reno to attend it. Pieter flew down and stayed with Jonathan's mother. He later flew to Wamena in Irian Jaya, Bali, & then attended the vegetarian festival in Phuket, Thailand. Jonathan & Jenn honeymooned in Bali, Malaysia, Thailand, and Hong Kong.
Our family Thanksgiving gatherings became smaller after the 80's. Sons Jan, Pieter, & Richard all became single. In 1991, we had a small dinner with Jan, Pieter, myself, and Donna Mc Intyre from Sacramento. This is a photo of Jan helping me with the turkey.

Robert Stack with Bethel & his brother Jim. I knew Jim Stack from Crystal Bay, NV. One day, a reporter from the Tahoe Bonanza was doing a story about the history of the home of their father, James Stack, an early resident of Crystal Bay. He was a Chicago advertising executive. I went along and got to meet the actor who played Elliot Ness and his wife.
Thanksgiving at my home in Reno: Richard's wife Janine, my son Jan, myself, my sons nephew Larry Green, son Richard, and son Pieter. Now that we look back twenty years ago, it seems that Pieter's wife Dahn was always the one taking the picture.

It has been a tradition in my family since I was a girl to have homemade ice cream on the 4th of July. In 1982, it was a family gathering since Jan and Larry were living in Reno. Jan Van Tassell, Bethel, step grandson Larry & his wife Kate Green, and my son Pieter.

The only time I flew out of the USA was with 11 people from Tahoe who went to Baggio City in the Philippines. We went to visit the healer Marcellino. It was an interesting experience based upon faith. It invigorated me & I went wading in the South China Sea! I hadn't been in water since days at Tahoe. They buried me in sand up to my neck. We visited wood carving & weaving factories, cultural dance shows, and many people.

Thanksgiving at my stepson Richard's home in Castro Valley, CA. My son Jan had a beard that year, myself, Maddie Marcell, my son Pieter, Richard, and my stepdaughter Janice's son, Larry Green of Reno. Richard's wife Janine was busy in the kitchen and Pieter's wife Dahn took the photo. Jan bought an Engagement Ring for his date but she surprised him by announcing her upcoming marriage to someone else!

Richard Van Tassell with his brother Pieter Van Tassel. After their father died in 1973, the family stopped gathering for Christmas. We all were busy with our lives in the 70's. Jan got divorced, Pieter married Dahn and spent 2 years in NY with Van Tassel & Mc Robbie relatives, and Richard remarried. I finally retired from the UNR Library. Richard decided that we should gather for family Thanksgivings, rotating between Reno and Castro Valley where he lived.

Vincent Price was in Reno to promote his cookbook 'A Treasury of Great Recipes' (1965). I was delighted to meet him. I used this photo to publicize my own cookbook 'Peeks Into Sierra Pantries' in 1969. It contained many recipes of people in the Reno-Tahoe area with illustrations by Stewart Walters, a former Disney cartoonist. I even made it into Herb Caen's column in the SF Chronicle! One ad had omitted the 'r' in pantries!

My sons Jan and Pieter with their Great Aunt Katie at Christmas in 1967. Jan, Janene, and their son Jonathan had moved to Walnut Creek, CA. Pieter left Reno by train to spend Christmas at his father's house in Walnut Creek. Christmas was family reunion time. Auntie made homemade chocolates and Maddie Marcell made dozens of types of treats. Van always wore a Chinese cap on Christmas morning and Pieter still has it in a hatbox.
Pieter loved the TV show Green Acres and when Eddie Albert appeared in Reno, we were at Press Night. We attended Press Night at Harrah's and the Sparks Nugget. In those days, it was mandatory to wear jacket & tie and it remainded so until the death of Bill Harrah. Pieter dressed like Oliver Wendall Douglas from the television series for this photo and we returned and had the photo autographed.

When we moved from Lake Tahoe to Reno, I still wrote my newspaper column for the Sierra Sun. Pieter missed Tahoe but since we lived in Reno, it gave us the chance to attend Press Night at the Sparks Nugget. After the shows, the Press went onstage and talked with the performers. Pieter stood with Jimmy Durante listening to his history of Orange County real estate until this photo could be taken.

A photo of the Van Tassel wedding in Walnut Creek, CA. Just married! My son Jan married Janene Grignon in Walnut Creek, CA. A happy occasion! Pieter & Richard, their father Raymond, and myself. We had just divorced the year before! Jan and Janene, then Jack Redman. (He knew Van since their school days at Oakland Tech & gave the bride away.) Steffie Delmont was Bride's Maid. (She was the daughter-in-law of Jennie, the woman who finally tamed Raymond & remained with him until he died.) Raymond's Aunt Katie Aldridge Merrill is on the right, the elder of the family.

My son Pieter was out in the water looking for crawdaddies one day and just as he picked one up, he heard a girl scream 'HERMAN!' at the top of her lungs. Laura Oakes had named the crayfish. Thus began their friendship! Pieter loved having the Oakes stay at our resort. Laura's father built a raft one year & they sailed it across the lake. Little did we know the day this photo was taken that our days at Tahoe would soon be over. It was our last year at Tahoe!

Halloween Party at King's Beach Elementary School at North Lake Tahoe. This was before the commercialization of Halloween when kids made up their own costumes. Mickie Barker is the clown on the left. Kathy Mc Intyre is in the middle and my son Pieter is on the right. Pieter & Kathy use to love playing in the big sand dunes at the Moon Dune estate in Tahoe Vista. Mc Intyre's had the Pine Cone Cottages next door to Moon Dune which was one of the early homes built when the native Washos still camped in the meadow summers.

I am on the left wearing a gown owned by Nina Sorenson. She wore it when she made her debut. Pearl Draney is seated with Jerry Rayburn standing. John Corbett took this publicity photo & it appeared in the Sacramento Bee. The Women's Club of North Lake Tahoe sponsored a benefit Gay 90's Ball for the Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee. It was held at the North Shore Club.
Lee Aversente, Pieter, & myself. Lee & her husband Joe came up every summer. Her brother, George Alario, learned that the Coffee Shop at Sandy Beach Hotel was vacant. I introduced him to owner George Phillips & he ran the Coffee Shop for the next 12 years! Pieter called Lee his 'Aunt Flower,' as she taught Flower Arranging. He adopted the Alario's as 'Uncle George' & 'Aunt Iris.' He loved washing dishes, peeling potatoes, & cooking his own hamburgers.

Taken the last day of the 1960 Winter Olympics. Pieter & I stood on the slope & watched the ski jumps, then went to the ice rink. I knew Hans Von Nulte, the photographer, who did Public Relations for Squaw Valley USA. He just died this month in Reno. We had our photo taken with Badwater Bill from the Sparks Nugget afterwards. We had rented our resort to the Russian Ski team but the government made them stay in Squaw Valley. We were still paid anyway, so we had time to attend the Games.

The first winter we spent at Lake Tahoe the icicles went down to the ground. I was managing The Woods Resort in Tahoe Vista for my brother-in-law. My son Jan started the school year in Danville, so Pieter & I were there alone with Ming Chee. Luckily, the Post Office was across the street in the Sandy Beach Hotel where we spent many evenings by the fireplace watching TV & playing games with the Postmaster's family.
Jan, Pieter, & I drove back to Alamo from Lake Tahoe to join Van, Richard, Aunt Katie, & our housekeeper Maddie Marcell for Xmas. Our dog Ming Chee had died & Van thought he would surprise us with a black Pekingnese, 'Bay Hootsie Hut Nooie.' Instead, he was shocked to see that we had a tan puppy we named Chee Mayling. He kept his Peke & nicknamed him Buttons. Pictured are: Aunt Katie Aldridge Merrill of Oakland, Raymond, Jan, & Richard Van Tassell, & Pieter Van Tassel, with Buttons and Chee Mayling.
My son Jan working on his model collection. He had airplanes hanging all over the entire ceiling of his room. He seldom missed the movie matinee at the local theater in Danville on Saturday afternoons and that passion eventually replaced his interest for building models when he left High School.

This is Pieter in Kindergarten in Alamo, CA. One year a couple stopped and asked to buy some lilacs. I told him that they could have all they wanted. They filled up their car. The next week, an outfit arrived for Pieter & it fit him perfectly. They owned the Children's Clothing & Toy store inside of the Claremont Hotel in Oakland. We took them lilacs every year & Pieter was allowed to pick 3 gifts. He always had to have a crepe ball that unwound with many small surprises. He wore Buster Brown clothes the entire time we lived in Alamo.
A group of people from Alamo, including Cliff and Dorathy Beck, Alberta and Bert Handley, went into Oakland for an evening of dinner and dancing. I don't remember what the occassion was. I kept that coat with the fox collar until just a few years ago when I sold it to a collector.

We were making aprons for a fund raiser at the Mt Diablo Country Club. The newspaper used a different photo because in those days it was not the policy to show a woman's legs. So they censored my legs!

My husband Raymond went out to California the winter of 1945. He & his mother bought a 3 acre farm in Alamo. We moved out in January & drove right to the house & moved in. My mother-in-law soon left her house in Berkeley & moved in with us. We went to dinner many times at Forbidden City in San Francisco, a Chinese showroom that featured the best Chinese singers. Bethel, Ruthie Wong, Janice, & Richard Van Tassell.
Janice and Richard Van Tassell in our backyard in Indianapolis during the Fall. Richard kept rabbits and kept busy with many projects. This was our last Autumn in Indiana. Van had been hospitalized twice & nearly died. That was the winter that he decided to move us back to California so that the children could be near their relatives.
