William Sylvester Van Tassel, born March 1, 1892 at his grandmother Sally's home in Redwood. He married Gertrude Wood (1917) and lived in the Wood cottage beside the big house. He worked several years at the Barton Hepburn Hospital, Ogdensburg. In 1921, he bought the Lamb farm in Wilna. He raised sheep besides dairy farming. In 1942, he bought a farm in Pulaski due to the expansion of Pine Camp. He had no desire to steer anything except a wagon & a team of horses. When his 4 daughters started High School, Gertrude learned to drive.
This photo of my father was taken by my mother, Gertrude Wood VanTassel. She had it enlarged and framed so it was displayed on the wall in our living room.
Besides dairy farming and sheep, there was a wide variety of animals on our farm. Dad raised pigs, chickens, goats, and turkeys. We even had guinea hens sometimes and I raised some white pekin ducks in 1937-38.
We also had a sugar bush and my dad took great pride in his fancy maple syrup. One year during the depression the market was so bad that he sold it from door to door for $2 a gallon.
