My grandmother was Ruth Whitfield Wall, born 13 May 1866 in Virginia, to Joel Gibbon Wall and Ann Susan Petty. Joel Gibbon Wall had a sister Mahala Whitfield Wall born 17 March 1815 in Virginia. Mahala & Joel's parents were Patrick Henry Wall & Polly Edmunds Warren of Surry, Virginia.
I would like to write a story about the source of 'Whitfield' being used as a family name. I was born in Virginia and know firsthand about using family surnames for descendents middle names - mine is Anne Pegram Allen.
This is not your usual 'family story', I realize, but it is 'my' family story and I surely would like to be able to write a story about the origin of my grandmother's middle name.
