Cathy was murdered by her boyfriend Mark Ketterhagen. The two began dating in October 1974, and two months after they broke up in March 1975 Cathy told Mark that she was pregnant with his child. Mark met with Cathy and her family where Cathy's mother Ruth said that adoption would be a possibility but that Mark was responsible for paying for Cathy's medical bills.
Two days after this meeting, Mark drank heavily and pickup up Cathy at her home then drove them to a bridge where he shot her with a .357 Magnum pistol and pushed her body into the Fox River.
