Updated: February 20, 2025
The Philippines was named in honor of King Philip II of Spain. An archipelago in Southeast Asia, it consists of over 7,000 islands and was colonized by Spain in 1565. Spain's colonization introduced Christianity to the region and it ruled for over 300 years.

In 1898, the Philippines was ceded to the United States following the Spanish-American War, leading to a period of American colonial rule and subsequent resistance, including the Philippine-American War. The country gained full independence in 1946.

The Philippines has a diverse culture influenced by its history of colonization and its geographic location. Today, a meld of American, Spanish, and indigenous elements adds to its unique character. It is known for its economic challenges, a vibrant culture, and its military importance in the region.
