The original photo has gone missing. This was found in an antique store. Written on the back was "Mr. and Mrs. Minnie Hanson Peterson".
I've "rescued" an old photograph of N. J. HENNINGSON which was taken at the Keithly Studio in Faulkton, SD when the young man was 16 years old. The photograph has the name of Mrs. H. J. HENNINGSON of Puyallup, WA written on the back of the photograph as if this might be who it was gifted to originally. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding this young man and his family: Niels Jenson HENNINGSON or HENNINGSEN was b. about 1874 in South Dakota to parents Hans J. HENNINGSON or HENNINGSEN (1845-1941) and Karen “Carrie” HANSON or HANSEN (1848-1930). Niels was one of 6 children born to this couple including, Henry “Henning”; Niels Jenson; Mary Gertrude; Anna Margarite; Sophia; and Fredrick S. HENNINGSEN, all born between 1871 and 1888. Niels had two spouses, Elizabeth OLESON (1879-1926) and Averil M. HUGH ELLIS (b. 1883). He died in Yakima, WA on 30 Jun 1950 and is buried in the Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima. Census records provide the following details: 1900 census of Spokane, WA: - living in a Railroad Camp Niels HENNINGSEN, age 26, born Aug 1873, born SD, parents born Denmark, a Railroad Laborer I am hoping to locate someone from his family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of his family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as John Danforth WILLIAMSON which came from the Stanton Studio in Springfield, OH. John's age is noted as 2 years and it is dated 7 Feb 1909. This was a studio that provided mail order photographs through newspaper advertising, so it is likely that John is not from Ohio. Based on limited research I was able to locate the following information regarding John and his family: John Danforth WILLIAMSON was b. 1 Feb 1907 in Alpina, SD to parents Rev. Jesse Philander WILLIAMSON (1872-1941) and Ada “Addie” Melissa JORDAN (b. 1878). John had one sibling, a sister Helen or Hellen Lois WILLIAMSON (1910-1933). John married Grace Lucille HARRIS (1909-2002) and together they had two children. John died 25 May 1932 in Beadle, SD. I am hoping to locate someone from John’s family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to the care of his family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

I’ve “rescued” an old photograph of La Monte ERB which was taken at his Ice Cream Shop in Lake Preston, SD on 9 Aug 1942. Along with the photograph are newspaper clippings regarding the opening of his shop and the announcement of the shop which appeared in the local paper. La Monte appears to be in his teens at the time the photograph was taken. Based on limited research I know the following about this young man and his family: La Monte L. ERB was the son of Irma Marie MATHEIS (b. 23 Feb 1903 – d. 9 Jul 1969) and Millard Lester ERB (b. 12 Nov 1897-d. 20 Aug 1979). Both parents are buried in the Dell Rapids Cemetery in SD. It appears that La Monte may have been their only child. Census records provide the following details: 1930 census of Lake Preston, SD: Lester M. ERB, age 32, married at age 26, born IA, parents born PA/IA, an Oil Station Manager Irma R. M. ERB, wife, age 27, married at age 20, born IA, parents born IL/IA La Monte ERB, son, age 5, born SD 1940 census of Lake Preston, SD: Millard L. ERB, age 41, born IA, a WPA Timekeeper Irma ERB, wife, age 36, born IA La Monte ERB, son, age 15, born Brookings Co. SD I’m hoping to locate someone from this family so that the photograph and newspaper articles can be returned to the care of family. During the summer months, Mary would ride her horse through Custer, SD while holding her little dog and a small portable radio to listen to. Mary would accept tips from Tourists who wanted to take her photograph. She was known to cover her head with a large paper grocery sack and ride off when she was offered no tips! This picture comes from the McLaughlin, S.D. Diamond Jubilee book, 1984. The caption tells it all. This is where my great grandparents settled in 1917, winning a land lottery to homestead on Standing Rock Reservation. My g. grandfather knew many of these Lakota personally, and helped them where the government failed woefully, mostly with food.

A photo of my second great grandparents, Johannes and Christine (Benszinger) Fuerst, in front of their home in Hutchinson County, Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). I'm sure this was taken by a traveling photographer from the east. Johannes and Christine were married just before the whole Fuerst family left S. Russia (Ukraine today), to come to the U.S. Christine died in April of 1883, under somewhat mysterious circumstances, in Woodbury County, Iowa, according to the family story. I can't find any document of any sort concerning her death or burial. If anyone knows anything concerning Christine's death, I sure would like to hear from them. sdak.goth1@gmail.com

A photo of Grandma Lydia (Fuerst) Zimmerman, in front of her house. My great grandmother, who lived to be a few months shy of 100 years old. She worked almost as hard as the employees in the nursing home she was in, helping in the kitchen, doing laundry, making beds, feeding patients who couldn't feed themselves, visiting with patients who were sicker than usual. Grandma Zimmerman found out the family was planning a surprise 100th birthday party for her, and she died a few days later.
