Hugh Linn gravesite
Hugh Linn gravesite
This is the gravestone of my great-great-grandfather Hugh Linn of Robinsonville, PA (1808-1881) at the Robinsonville Cemetery near Clearville, Bedford County, PA. At the age of 53, Hugh volunteered along with two sons to serve the Union in the American Civil War. He was a teamster or wagoner, presumably moving supplies for the troops, He, Riley, and William were at Harpers Ferry when it fell to Stonewall Jackson's army. He survived the war and joined the fraternal organization Grand Army of the Republic; thus, the GAR marker at his grave. This is a photo I took while visiting the grave in the summer of 1990. Hugh's son Alexander was my great-grandfather, and I would love to hear from descendants of certain of Hugh's children : (1) John S. Linn, who went to California possibly as early as the 1860s and certainly by 1880; (2) Elizabeth, who I believe married Foster Bergstresser; (3) Lucinda, wife of Bartley Miller; (4) William, who married Isabelle Frances Stott; or (5) Alfred, who married Rhoda B. Allender.

2020 marks 20 years since the inception of AncientFaces. We are the same team who began this community so long ago. Over the years it feels, at least to us, that our family has expanded to include so many. Thank you!
William's supposed birth place of "Kilmacrenan, Loch Linnhe X-Scotland" is a combination of two separate errors : (1) Kilmacrenan is not in Scotland but in County Donegal, Ireland, where some Scottish Lynns settled in the first Ulster plantation; and (2) no one as ever been born in Loch anything because a loch is a body of water, not a property or piece of land. His name, reported as William David Cameron Lynn, likewise is a conglomeration of things. In that era in Scotland, it was rare that anyone had even one let alone two middle names. For the Ayrshire Lynn family from which William is believed to have come, first and last name are all that appear in the centuries-long historical Scottish record.
John Ellingsen Lynn was born in 1585 in Sør-Trøndelag Norway, and died at age 51 years old circa 1636. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember John Ellingsen Lynn.
