Elmer ran for Commissioner, third ward. Stood for progressive city, with due regard for its people on tax burdens. He was defeated but went on to other civic duties. He served as vice president of the Burton Heights Businessman's association. Learned the workings of the Grand Rapids city government, methods for securing improvements for that part of the city, etc.

Mary Elizabeth (Hall) Hale
Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" had a hobby of giving readings on stage and took speech lessons to improve delivery. The Women's club gave her $5.00 for readings. She was also in a play as Queen Ester. Her full-time employment was in various department stores. Herpolsheimers, Steketee's and Bon Marche. The millinery department used her skills to remake hats that didn't sell and return them to the department for sale.
