Neighborhood Halloween in the 1930's
Neighborhood Halloween in the 1930's
This looks like a group of neighborhood children celebrating Halloween in the 1930's - the names are unknown and the actual date of the photo is unknown, but the costumes look homemade like they were in the 1930's (and even in the 1950's!). I see a skeleton, and an "Uncle Sam" and a "newsboy" and maybe a pioneer woman . . . but what is the boy on the left???
Halloween Rooster
Halloween Rooster
Around the turn of the century, there was a French actor who dressed as a rooster. I don't know if this is a photo of him or if he inspired this Halloween costume. But a giant rooster is truly a Jurassic Park moment!

Halloween Egg - 1920's?
A photo of a Halloween egg, perhaps from the 1920's. The name of the woman in the costume is unknown but the photo is classic - not like Halloween today, which may be full of spooky costumes, this looks to be "Humpty Dumpty", the female version. before she/he fell.

Stan Lee - Comic Book Legend
Stan Lee - Comic Book Legend
A photo of Stan Lee, the Hulk, and Spiderman. Stan Lee was born Stanley Martin Lieber on December 28, 1922 in New York City to Romanian Jewish parents Celia Solomon Lieber and Jack Lieber. His brother is Larry Lieber and is 9 years his junior. As a child, Lee was influenced by heroic books and movies. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1939 at 16 ½ years old. Afterward ,he joined the WPA Federal Theatre Project.

In 1939, he became an assistant in the Timely Comics division of pulp magazine and comic-book publisher Martin Goodman’s company. Timely Comics would later evolve into Marvel comics. He made his comic book debut in 1941 with “Captain America Foils the Traitor’s Revenge” where he used the pseudonym Stan Lee. (Hoping to save his given name for a career as a novelist.)

In 1942, Lee joined the United States Army and served in the Signal Corps where he wrote slogans, manuals and training films; occasionally cartooning. Playwright was his military classification.

He married Joan Clayton Boocock on December 5, 1947. They had two children in the 1950’s: Joan and Jan, though only Joan survived.

By the 1950’s, Martin Goodman’s company was known as Atlas Comics. Here, Lee was in charge of creating a new superhero team apart from the Justice League of America. He introduced complex , somewhat flawed characters (previously, superheroes were "perfect" people). The first superhero character group Lee and Jack Kirby created was the Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four consists of Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Touch and the Thing. Other characters Lee created include the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, X-Men, Daredevil, Doctor Strange and Spider Man.

Stan Lee would go on to become the figurehead and public face for Marvel Comics - which would eventually lead Stan Lee to "Comic Book Legend" status. In 1981, he left New York and moved to California to develop Marvel’s TV and movie properties. In 1998, Peter Paul and Lee began internet based production and marketing company, Stan Lee Media. In 2001, Stan Lee Media filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It was dismissed from bankruptcy in 2006.

In the 2000s, Lee began working with DC superheroes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and the Green Lantern. In 2001, Lee and two others (Gill Champion and Arthur Lieberman) formed Purveyors of Wonder Entertainment, known colloquially as POW!, to develop film, tv and video game properties.

Lee was an official guest of the San Diego Comic-Con hosted in 1975, 1986,1995, and 2010. The 1995 Comic Con Chicago (now Wizard World Chicago) featured a Stan Lee roast. In 2007 & 2008, Stan Lee was a Notable guest at the New York Comic Con. In 2007, Marvel Legends introduced a Stan Lee action figure at the Comic-Con International. In 2008, Stan Lee was awarded the inaugural new York Comics Legend Award during the New York Comic Con. He returned again as a guest in NYCC in 2010. Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo Presented by POW! Entertainment launched in September 2012. Happening two months after the San Diego Comic-Con International, it still sold out 125,000 tickets online in less than 2 hours.

In 2010 he partnered with Guardian Media Entertainment on the Guardian Project to create superhero mascots of the National Hockey League.

He founded a non-profit organization, the Stan Lee Foundation, to focus on literacy, education, and the arts in 2010.

The city of Long Beach and County of Los Angeles declared Stan Lee Day to be October 2, 2009. Stan Lee is the one and only comic book legend.

Lisa Marie Presley
Lisa Marie Presley was born to Elvis Aaron Presley (1935 - 1977) and Priscilla Ann Wagner Beaulieu (born 1945). She was an only child. Lisa Presley married musician Danny Robert Keogh (1964 - 2009) on October 3rd, 1988 at the Scientology Church where they met in Sumner County Tennessee. The couple had children Danielle Riley Keough (born 1989) and Benjamin Storm Keough (1992 - 2020), and they later divorced on May 6th 1994 in the Dominican Republic. A few weeks after divorcing Danny Keough, she married the pop star Michael Jackson. Lisa and Michael divorced later in 1996 and there weren't children born to the marriage. In August of 2002, Lisa Presley married actor Nicholas Cage, but Cage filed for divorce the following November. They also didn't have children. Of this marriage, Lisa Marie said that Cage "considered her just another Elvis souvenir." In 2005, she married Michael Lockwood, a guitarist in her band. Her first husband, Danny, was the best man. (It is said that Danny and Lisa Marie remained lifelong friends, despite their divorce.) Michael and Lisa had twin daughters, and they divorced in 2016. Tragedy struck the life of Lisa Marie Presley when her only son, Benjamin Storm Keough, killed himself at her house in Calabasas, California, just outside of Los Angeles. Although she had written and recorded numerous songs in her career, including some recorded as duets with her famous father, Elvis, after the death of her son, she retired from public life. She did appear, however, at the Golden Globe ceremony a few days before her death. It was at this ceremony that actor Austin Butler won the best actor award for playing her father in the movie "Elvis." Lisa Marie was survived by her mother, Priscilla, and her three daughters - her eldest from her marriage to Keough, and the two youngest, from her marriage to Michael Lockwood.

People's Park Protests Berkeley CA 1969
People's Park protests during the Spring Quarter at Berkeley CA. I was there and I remember talking to the National Guard members called out by Governor Reagan. They were young (18 yrs old, 19) and scared. They were told that we would try to give them food laced with acid (LSD) and/or marijuana. We talked to them, calmed them down, gave them flowers.

One student James Rector, was shot and killed. Several more were injured, one ending up in a wheelchair. (This happened a few weeks before Kent State.)

Middle-aged women, shopping on Shattuck, were rounded up and jailed simply for being there.
Summer of Love
Summer of Love
This looks like the summer of love (1967) in San Francisco. Kids from everywhere went to San Francisco to celebrate the Summer of Love in the Haight District. I remember driving through the Haight (I was still in high school) with my mother, my boyfriend's mother, my boyfriend, and my sister. We just wanted to see what was going on. While we were stopped at a light, a couple of hippies walked up and handed us a "doobie." It was probably oregano, but it was exciting for us.
Anti- war march
Anti- war march
This anti-war march (against the Viet Nam war) is what I remember from my student days at Berkeley. These weren't street people - they were students and previous students. I don't know if this was from one of our marches but it certainly looks like it.
Hippies at Woodstock?
Hippies at Woodstock?
This could have been taken at Woodstock - the activity and woods certainly look like it. But look at the man's hand: this could be a hand rolled cigarette but I'd bet it's a "doobie."

Actually, except for the woods, it could have been any of the street people in Berkeley in the 1960's.

Janis Joplin at Woodstock, probably waiting to go. A singer who smokes . . .and reputedly drank Southern Comfort in copious amounts! She was the singer of Big Brother and the Holding Company.

I don't know who the woman on the left is - but I remember being that thin and wearing a dress like that!
