In the summer of 1987, I was home in Selma, Alabama visiting family. I discovered from a relative of Mr. Durgan's that he was still living in Selma, Alabama and that he had some health issues. I graduated from R.B. Hudson High School, Selma, Alabama with the Class of 1963, and I hadn't seen any Hudson High teachers since then. I really wanted to see Mr. Durgan, so I went along with his relative to his house to see him and to say hello. When I entered his house, Mr. Durgan, who was sitting in a lounge chair, looked toward the door and saw us enter. I said to Mr. Durgan, "You don't remember me, but you were my favorite teacher at R.B. Hudson High School." Mr. Durgan's response, in a slow voice, was, "Why you say I don't remember." We both laughed. That next year on September 23, 1988, he was gone.

One day in 1962, at R.B. Hudson High School in Selma, Alabama, the bell rang to change classes. Students hurried into Mr. Andrew Durgan's biology classroom and took their seats. Mr. Durgan walked into the Biology classroom, the students were waiting and watching him, as he put his book bag on his desk. He turned to face the class and with a serious look on his face, he asked them to name three fruits that began with the letter "N." The students started thinking to themselves, trying to figure out the answer. They all thought it was something they needed to remember for an upcoming test. One student whispered, "Nectarine has to be one of them." The students could not come up with the answers after a few minutes, and Mr. Durgan said, "Okay, okay, I see you all are having trouble finding the answer, so I'll tell you." Then he said, "The three fruits that begin with the letter "N" are Napples, Noranges and Nanas." The whole classroom erupted in laughter and Mr. Durgan laughed with them. Mr. Durgan was that kind of teacher, he had a way of putting his students at ease in his classroom. He enjoyed having fun with his students and they enjoyed being in his classroom.
