Rachel Ann De Beer, eldest daughter of nine children born to Fred and Lois (Wielenga) De Beer, was born July 15, 1950, in Orange City, Iowa. Her family lived on a farm near Carnes until she was seven years old. At this time, her father took a teaching position with the Central Minnesota Christian School in Prinsburg. Rachel attended school through fifth grade in Prinsburg and made life-long friends in those early years. In 1961, her father took a teaching position with the Orange City Christian School; this brought the family back to northwest Iowa. She made her profession of faith at the First Reformed Church in Orange City where she was active in C.E. and Girl's League. Rachel began piano lessons in Prinsburg and continued them in Orange City. She was an accomplished pianist and readily shared her talents with her family and friends. Her love of the French language began as a student at Maurice-Orange City Community School and after her graduation in 1968; she was off to Central College in Pella, majoring in French. College was an exciting and liberating time for Rachel, at last having some privacy, away from her brother and six "little" sisters. She loved studying at Central and again made lasting friendships along the way. She would eventually change her major to elementary education and graduated with her B.A. in 1972. The following summer she and her first roommate, Holly, spent the summer in Hawaii. Her first job was teaching second grade in Ainsworth, Iowa and after one year she was hired by the Louisa-Muscatine School District to teach second grade in Letts, Iowa. Rachel was a kind, caring teacher and always went the extra mile to make learning fun and exciting. After earning her master's degree from the University of Iowa, she moved to seventh grade to teach language arts, not only challenging her students but herself as well. While teaching at "L&M" she made her home in Muscatine. Rachel soon made many wonderful friends in Muscatine and became active in the community. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school, enjoyed Bible Studies and helped with the Emmaus Café. She also enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, reading, traveling, cross stitch and eating mashed potatoes. She loved living by the Mississippi, and the historical significance of the area. She delighted in giving her guests a personal tour. Although she loved her life and friends in Muscatine, and trips to Orange City required a nine hour drive, she made regular trips home during the holidays and summers, usually picking up a "little" sister along the way. When her nieces and nephews began to arrive, she derived great pleasure from spending week-ends and holidays with them. In 2007, she, her mother, sisters, niece and an aunt traveled to the Netherlands for a six day tour. Rachel also took trips with her family to Colorado, Washington D.C. and Virginia. After a De Beer family reunion in 2011, Rachel took a special interest in learning the Dutch language; basically teaching herself, with the help of Dutch friends made on Facebook. She hosted these friends on two occasions when they traveled to visit Orange City for Tulip Festival. Rachel was diagnosed with a sarcoma in 2008 and after two surgeries at the University of Iowa, she moved to Orange City in 2014, to be closer to more of her family. She went on to receive treatment at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls and the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Her courage throughout her course of treatment was unwavering. Each of her family members played an essential role in helping her live life to the fullest while she battled the cancer. She was surrounded by her family until the very end and will always be a source of inspiration and bravery. Her family includes her mother, Lois De Beer of Orange City; her siblings and their spouses: Peter and Rachael De Beer of Orange City, Judy and Craig Stark of Prole, Iowa, Sheila and Keith De Boer of Orange City, Shawn and David Langkamp of Oskaloosa, Pam and Steve Nogel of Omaha, Jill and Garrett Apel of Beason, Illinois, Rebecca and Edward Vander Wilt of Sheldon, and Christopher and Kristen De Beer of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; many nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews; several aunt and uncles and friends.
