Valeri Leigh (Nay) Nichols was born on April 20, 1972 in Martinsville, Indiana United States to Roger B Nay and Patricia Ann (Upton) Nay, and has siblings Vicki Lynn (Nay) Sheppard and Matthew Scott Nay. Roger Blaine Nay of Martinsville, Morgan County, Indiana was born on December 2, 1938, and had siblings Hobart Junior Nay, Kathryn Louise (Nay) Tomey, and Jackie Paul Nay. He was married to Patricia Ann (Upton) Nay on May 25, 1958 in Martinsville, Morgan County United States, and they were together until Roger's death on December 12, 2008. He had children Vicki Lynn (Nay) Sheppard, Matthew Scott Nay, and Valeri Leigh (Nay) Nichols. Roger Nay was buried circa December 2008 at Mount Nebo Cemetery in Martinsville, Morgan County.

As an adult, Vicki legally changed her name to Victoria. She met her husband, Everett Lee Sheppard on September 22, 1977 at a frat party at the University of Evansville. She was 18 years old, and he was 20.

Pat met Roger when she took her brother, David’s, shift at Hoby Nay’s diner in Martinsville. Roger, aged 17, was waiting tables, and Pat, aged 15, washed dishes.
