When this Cabinet Card was done, the photographer identified these American Indians as Eagle of Light, Nez Perce; Joseph, Nez Perce; and Smohollah. However, Bill Gulick in "Chief Joseph Country: Land of the Nez Perce", 1981, identifies them as Billy Carter, Ollokot (Chief Joseph's brother) and Middle Bear.

Did the men give Charles Phillips (the photographer) the wrong names or did the photographer mix up the names when he made the cabinet cards? It doesn't look like Chief Joseph to me.

Wynona McDonald That's right about Ollokot in the picture

Kathy Pinna Wynona, I've heard that from a couple of other people, too - are you a relative of Ollokot or do you study the tribe's history? It would be great to have a really definitive answer! Thank you so much for commenting and sharing your knowledge of the Nez Perce.
