Photo Details

An 1888 photo of Kitch Hawk, also known as Jake the Bracelet Maker. He is wearing a Chilkat blanket. (Isn't it beautiful?)

I am assuming that because he is wearing a Chilkat blanket, he is a Chilkat Native American. The Chilkats are an active tribe today in Alaska in Klukwan (southern Alaska).

And I'm assuming because he was known as Jake the Bracelet Maker, he was a jewelry maker.

Pat Katzenmeyer-Webb The following is information that I got from Kaawóotk Ghuwakaan, an expert in Tlingit culture.

"Jim the Jeweler, Silver Jim, Silversmith Jim, Jim Jacobs.

He was Koosk'eidí from Xhaas Hít in Sitka: his name was Kichxhaak, as well as Yéilnaawú.

The Koosk'eidí are part of the L'ooknaxh.ádi.

The shákee.át he's wearing is still in clan hands."
