My name is April. I believe this the Kelvie Coleman that is my grandfather. If anyone has any information it would be appreciated. I don't know much on my families history. My mother is Rita Coleman. She was born in Jan of 1951.
I have been doing some family history research and have found stories that Christopher Layton worked on the farm of Prime Coleman. It is said that he worked for the Coleman family and when the family came to U.S. they helped Christopher come also. It is said that he cooked for them on the journey. There is a story about Grandpa Coleman giving Christopher a teasing jest about making potatoes and a pie. Well, Chriptopher did make potatoes and a pie but it was one dish and everyone loved it and wanted to know how it was made. It became the "Chris recipe". My ansestors joined the church at about the same time as Christopher. In the Layton history it said he was fired after joining the church. Did he go to work for my Grandpa after that. And did my Grandfather help Layton come to the U.S. My Grandfather was very wealthy in England and I hope he did help. I think He did, but does anyone now more about this story?
William Coleman was born in 1801-2 in Tennessee and died after 1888 in Red River Parish, Louisiana. He married Sarah Ogden, daughter of Daniel Ogden and Mary Sapp in Tattnall Co., Georgia ca 1826. The family lived in Alabama and a short time in Mississippi, before settling in Bienville Parish, LA. Sarah was born in 1806 in Tattnall Co., GA.

Their children were James Jackson, Nancy E., Sirena A., William A., Greenberry, Sarah Ardilla, Amanda, John H. and Eugenia (my g-gm). They were born in Alabama; Eugenia was born in Miss. After Sarah's death, William remarried, left Bienville Parish and went to Red River Parish.
My ancestor "Judy", a Native American, was purchased from William Peters of SC, by Francis Coleman of Dinwiddie County, VA. in ca 1714. Francis Coleman paid William Peters 25 schillings for Judy, who was ca 14 yeas old at the time. Francis brought Judy back to VA where she, soon therafter, began a family of which I am a descendant. In 1705 the state of VA passed a law that prohibited the enslavement of Native Americans. Shortly after the passage of this law, Judy's descendants began suing the state to recover their freedom. Nanny, one of Judy's descendants, was one of the first to recover her freedom in 1777, followed by a long list of other descendants of Judy. One of the more famous of the Coleman suits was that of "Cate, a Pauper Vs George Atkin & John Wyche Guardian of the Simms Orphans." Cate recovered her freedom, largely on the testimony of old man Francis Coleman (White Master) and other white Coleman family members. The case was heard in the Brunswick County Court
of VA. Other Coleman suits were brought in the General Courts of Richmond, Petersburg, and Williamsburg, VA. The Coleman slaves were all successful in court based on the maternity line of Judy's Native American Ancestry. Just recently, on a visit to the Law Library of The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, VA, I found court documents referencing the orignal "Nanny" case of 1777. Thus, the Black Colemans of VA have been legally free since 1777.
