Bernie Crosby During The Civil War a man refused to go and fight. He hid in the swamps of South Carolina, near Charleston, in a little town called Smoaks. He hired two black women to cook and clean for him. He built a house and lived his life there until he died. In his will he left his house and property to the women who, later, sold it to my grandfather, Daniel Moses Crosby. No one ever knew the name of the "deserter".
