Mystery Photo in a Locket, South Dakota?
In about 1993, Jim Paulson purchased a jar filled with Army buttons from Norma's This-and-That Shop in Canton, South Dakota. He later noticed that one of the buttons appeared to be different and had a hinge. It was a locket disguised as a jacket button, He opened the locket and found this photograph inside of an unknown person,

Who is the person in the photograph? What is the history behind the locket?
The Hass Family Farm House
The Hass Family Farm House
This photograph shows the northwest corner of the Hass family's farm house. Four generations of the Hass family resided here from 1909 to 2002. The home and the 160 acre farm were originally purchased by James and Dorthea Hass in 1909. The house and farm were last owned by Anna (Ranschau) Hass and were sold in 2002 following her death in 2001. The house and the farm are located eight miles northeast of Hawarden, Iowa.

This is the grave marker of James O'Connor and Bridget (Jennings) O'Connor, photographed by Brian M. Hass on July 29, 2007. James was the son of Michael O'Connor and Elizabeth (Betts) O'Connor. Mary was the daughter of Michael Jennings and Bridget (Donaghy) Jennings. James and Bridget were both Irish immigrants and were parents to eleven children.

The grave marker of Mary "Mamie" J. (McGuire) Lass, photographed by Brian M. Hass on July 29, 2007. Mary was the daughter of James and Elizabeth (Swift) McGuire. She was the wife of Peter Joseph Lass and the mother of three children. Mary died when her youngest daughter, Mary, was only twelve days old.

Frank was the son of Lawrence "Larry" Farley and Elizabeth B. (O'Connor) Farley. Mary was the daughter of Peter Lass, Jr. and Mary "Mamie" (McGuire) Lass. Frank and Mary were parents to eight children.

The grave marker of Peter Lass, Sr., photographed by Brian M. Hass on January 7, 2003. It's located at block 2, lot 4, grave 2. Peter was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany; and, he came to America with his uncle in 1852. He was the husband of Regina (Cooper) Lass and the father of twelve children, eleven of whom survived him.

The grave marker of Myrna Elizabeth (Farley) Hass, photographed by Brian M. Hass on October 26, 2000. Myrna had always preferred her maiden name over her married name; so, she was buried under her maiden name. She was the youngest of eight children born to Frank and Mary (Lass) Farley and was a mother of two sons, who survived her. She was also survived by a young granddaughter.

Lawrence was the husband of Mary (Goff) Farley and the father to Anna, Patrick, James, Mary, and Lawrence. His wife was buried in Illinois.
