He had siblings including James (1907-1986), William Grant (1910-1988), and Ester Clara Heggie (1919-2002). On September 24, 1921 he and his family departed from Glasgow, Scotland and immigrated to the United States arriving in New York, New York. From there, they moved to and resided in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA. He was married to Katherine Heggie and they had a daughter together, Michelle Heggie.
