Emery Thurston Holden Sr. was born on July 7th, 1893, according to his death certificate, or July 19th, according to his World War I draft card, his headstone, and North Carolina birth records, in Brunswick, North Carolina to Benjamin Lafayette Holden (1854 - 1935) and Amelia Hazeltine Edwards (1860 - 1935). He had five brothers: Thomas, Rufus, Grover, Oscar, and Bennie Holden, and one sister: Bertha V. Holden.
Emery Holden, 23, married Cornelia Viola Bounds (1901 - 1981), age 15, on July 1st, 1916 in Supply, North Carolina. Their ages were such an issue to her parents that an article appeared in the newspaper, airing their objection. See Young Wilmington Couple run away . . .. Emery and Cornelia had four daughters: "Baby" Holden, who died in 1927 as an infant, and another "Baby" Holden who died as an infant in 1931, Carolyn, and Viola who survived; plus two sons, Beaufort Leon Holden and Emery Thurston Holden Jr.
Emery died on April 26th, 1964 in Wilmington, North Carolina at the age of 70. He is buried in Prospect Cemetery in Brunswick County, North Carolina.
