Gerald Thomas Johnson killed himself in 2008 while in prison serving life imprisonment without parole, for killing his best friend's (Jose Najera Jr.) parents in their home. He was 19 years old and an honors student at a private school when he killed Jose R. Najera and Elena Castro Najera in Garden Grove. Both victims were stabbed more than 20 times and it was considered one of the most gruesome murders in Garden Grove's history. Gerald is believed to have committed the murders because the Najera family was keeping their life savings of approximately $70k in cash in a safety deposit box in preparation for the (non-existent) Y2k bug. Jose Najera Jr. was also charged with the murders as he plotted to steal his parents' life savings, and it was later discovered that he was the mastermind behind the crime.
