His employer was listed as C Howard.Herman then enlisted in the United States Army on February 8, 1945, in Houston, Texas. He was diagnosed with "Herniation, nucleus pulposus," which indicates a herniated disc condition in his back. The type of injury was categorized as a disease and not a traumatic injury. Due to this condition, he was discharged from service on August 14, 1945, from a General Hospital.
