Jean-Jacob Heppell was born in New York to Nicolas Heppell. His father was a surgeon and major in Lafayette's army who fought with the Americans for Independence. Jean-Jacob was born in 1753, the year after his parents married.
According to the website heppell.ca, Jean-Jacob was taken prisoner by Native Americans making his way from New York to Canada through the woods and lost his first wife and 12 year old son. Together with 2 cousins, he eventually made his way to Rimouski, Québec in the late 1780's. In Canada, Jean-Jacob registered as a laborer (french "laboureur").
He had 3 children with his (second) wife, Agnes, whom he married in/about 1790. Jean-Jacob had 7 or 8 children with his third wife Victorie.
