Sen. Biden married in private rite
The following appeared in The Morning News in Wilmington Delaware on Saturday June 18th 1977:

Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. was married yesterday morning to Jill Tracy Jacobs, daughter of Mr. and MRs. Donald C. Jacobs of Willow Grove, Pa., in a private ceremony in New York City. News of the marriage was made public in a brief statement issued by Biden's Washington, D.C., office late yesterday afternoon.

Mrs. Biden has taught English at St. Mark's High School near Wilmington for about a year, according to the statement. She is a graduate of the University of Delaware, and is doing postgraduate work at West Chester (Pa.) State College. Her father is president of the Intercounty Savings and Loan Association of Philadelphia. Biden, 34, has served as the Democratic U.S. senator from Delaware since 1972. He served for two years before that as New Castle County councilman. He graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965, and received a law degree from Syracuse University in 1968. A spokesman for the senator would not comment further on the ceremony or the couple's plans.

Joseph R. Biden Sr., the senator's father, said by phone last night that the ceremony was "a very private affair, with just the family members present. A Jesuit priest officiated, and Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs went up from Philadelphia with their other three daughters. My wife and I attended with our other two sons, and my daughter and her husband. And when it was over we all went out to lunch at Southampton and came home." The ceremony took place at 11 a.m., Mr. Biden said. He said any other questions would have to be answered by the senator. This is the senator's second marriage. His first wife Neilia, and infant daughter Amy, were killed in an automobile accident in 1972. He has two sons, Joseph R. III and Robert.
