John Ryden Hembury was born in Calgary, Alberta on Dec 11, 1914 to parents Charles Robert Hemborg Hembury (1884-1951) and Elsie Winnifred Stringer (1886-1968). He had a sister, Elsie Winnifred Stringer and grew up in Lacombe, Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. He then moved to the United States living in California. John enlisted in the US military on March 26, 1942 and gained naturalization on May 5, 1943 in California while he was living in Los Angeles, California. John married Carrie Irene Hembury (1924-2014) on may 5, 1948. They had two children together.

John enlisted on October 1, 1942 in Syracuse New York and served in the Army until his discharge date of November 29, 1945. The next year, on October 6, 1946 he married Marjorie Marie Rannings (1927-2007) in Union Springs, NY. The couple had three children together including a son named Micheal J Hembury and lived in Auburn, Cayuga, New York, USA.
