In the 1940 census, "J Gilbert" was living as a lodger on Channing Wy in Berkeley CA. He was a student - it must have been at UC Berkeley - he was in his second year of college. US World War II draft card information: John was 21, living in Urbana IL, 6 ft 1 in tall, 155 lbs, had brown hair, blue eyes, a dark complexion, and his next of kin was "Mrs Carnely".
