He was a graduate of St. Alphonsus High School, Dearborn, Michigan and Wayne State University of Detroit. As an adult, he lived in Ithaca, Tompkins, New York, USA. Joseph registered for the WWII draft on June 28, 1942, in Dearborn, Wayne, Michigan. At the time, he was 20 years old, resided in Dearborn, and his employer was William Hanses.Then on February 13, 1943, Joseph enlisted in the Army. During World War II, Joseph served in the Infantry Division, specifically within the Infantry arm or service. His deployment took him to the European Theatre, specifically France. Joseph's bravery and commitment were evident during the Normandy Invasion, where he displayed exceptional service. In recognition of his valor and sacrifices, he was awarded the Purple Heart. On July 31, 1944, Joseph was located at the Rennes Military Hospital in Rennes, France. During his time in the military, he endured detainment by Germany but was eventually liberated.
