Leon Edmondson Lanier was born, November 25, 1916, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the sixth child of J.W. and Hattie McRee Lanier. He graduated from Bethel High School in 1934 into the Great Depression. He worked in the maintenance department at Oklahoma Baptist University for a year's tuition. He then was employed at a service station and December 22, 1940, he married his long-time girlfriend, Lois Marie Whitlow. She was teaching school in Billings, Oklahoma, and when school was out they set up housekeeping in the back of a neighborhood grocery store owned by a relative. Just after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, January 9, 1942, their first child, Julia Ann, was born. Four months later Leon went to work for Oklahoma Natural Gas Co. in the service department, as he often said, getting a raise from 40 cents an hour to 45 cents an hour. The young family rented a house but as they expected he would be called up to military, and a second child was coming, they bought a small house. ONG applied for Leon to be declared "essential" because all their young men had entered the military. Leon worked many long overtime hours and often said his overtime check was larger than his regular one. The family's second daughter, Linda Sue, was born November 12, 1944. Leon was soon named supervisor. Their son, Jerry Leon, was born March 21, 1948. Leon expanded their home buying the adjoining lot and moving that house off and also adding three rooms onto the back of their home. Later he also bought the house behind them and moved it off as well. He loved to play golf, was a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club but probably gardening was his first love. He grew squash, green beans, tomatoes and even corn on their large lot. In about 1954 he was named Shawnee District Sales Manager at ONG. His family often teased that ONG was first on his list, the Country Club second and they knew they were third. He was a wonderful provider, strong, honest and supportive of his family. He sent his three children to a private Christian college and once he retired from ONG after 40 years, he and Lois traveled to Europe where their daughter, Linda, was living with her Air Force husband. He didn't always want to travel but Lois did so sent her and their daughters on a trip to Hawaii. He was in fair health until his last year and for a few months he was in a nursing home. He was fine as long as he could get the golf channel on his TV. He slipped away with pneumonia leaving his wife of 60 years, three children and seven grandchildren.
