He had siblings Paul Gerhard Reitan (1895-1974), Alfhilde Sophie Reitan I (1899-1902), Alfhild 'Alfie' Reitan II (1903-1974), Clara Margrette Reitan (1907-1984), and Melvin Charles Reitan Sr (1912-1968). He resided in Bellingham, Whatcom, Washington and worked various sawmill occupations and was also a deckhand on a tug boat. At the time of his registration on October 16, 1940, he was 30 years old and resided in Friday Harbor, San Juan, Washington. He was employed by Roche Harbor Lime and Cement Co. Later, on June 6, 1942, Martin Reitan enlisted in Tacoma, Washington. He held the rank of Private in the Selectees (Enlisted Men) and served in the Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA.

Martin Reitan of Pendleton, Umatilla County, Oregon was born on March 19, 1887, and died at age 87 years old in April 1974.
