In the 1920 and 1930 censuses, Norman was living with his parents and siblings (1920, his older sister Ruth, 1930, younger siblings Neil and Evelyn). In the 1930 census, the family was living in Struthers OH and father Neil was a carpenter in building/construction. In the 1940 census, Norman was 22 and living in Boardman OH. He was a hired man on the farm and living in the household of John Hitchcock. He had completed the 8th grade. On his WW2 draft card, he was 6 ft tall, weighed 165 lbs, had a light freckled complexion, brown eyes, and brown hair. He listed his next of kin as his mother - Elva Anna Symons, said he was living in Salem OH, and that he waw working for Armour Lloyd. Records say that Norman married Beula Ruth Gordon on February 7, 1944 and Virginia Still on June 29 1956. He had a son, Larry Hans Symons, 1958-1994.
