Family and freinds loved Miroslaw "Mack" Stawnychka. After their mom got sick and died in Sask. Canada Mack would make a lunch for his younger siblings to take with them to school so they would have something to eat. Mack would put butter on fresh bread then sprinkle a little sugar on top to sweeten their day at school. I think that this is a sweet memory to remember of Mack. Family and friends were very important to him. Mack along with his sister Margaret also had great affection for their animal companions. "Everyone Loved Mack"

His real name was Miroslaw but they called him Mack. I think Sharon listed below would know the most as I believe her mother was his sister? Unfortunately she never responded to me.

South Sask. Regiment company D took out an early morning raid while still under the cover of darkness on a long German trench which was heavily fortified. Private John Wathen reported that his best friend Mack was killed instantly by shrapnel just 3 or 4 feet away from him. He described the raid on the Germans as very frightening as shells and bullets were flying everywhere. He described how he tried to drag the injured to safety. He Also said that he knew for sure that his friend Mack Stawnychka was carrying letters and snaps from home (Canada) when he fell.

Correction: In a letter to John Stawnychka (Mack's dad) John Wathen described that after his buddy Mack was hit he ran back to help him and there was nothing that he could have done so he then went on to help any injured fellow soldiers to safety.
