Uncover new discoveries and connections today by sharing about people & moments from yesterday.
  • Introduction

VERSION #1: BIRTH A Samuel Morris was born about 1808 in Ireland according to the US Census of Wisconsin in 1860. MARRIAGE AND FAMILY It was calculated in 2020 that Samuel Morris married Mary Ann [unknown maiden name as of 2022]. Her married name was on an 1851 ship manifest that described a family: Mary Ann Maurice (probably variant of Morris) and son, Alexander, and daughter Mary J(ane). IMMIGRATION Samuel Morris' name was not on the same ship manifest in any variant in 1851. He probably left Ireland before or after his wife's and children's emigration in 1851. RESIDENCE A Samuel Morris (age 52) resided with an Alexander (age 16) in Wisconsin in 1860 according to the Census that year. DEATH Samuel Morris's wife probably died before 1860, because she was not reported in Census 1860. Samuel Morris's daughter, Mary Jane, age 14 in 1860, may have married or begun employment as a servant somewhere in the USA. A different Samuel Morris died in 1891 in Wisconsin in a county (Grant), 66 miles away from the county (Dane) that was reported for this Samuel Morris in Wisconsin in US Census 1860. This Samuel Morris may have died about 1861 in Dane County, Wisconsin. Alex may have independently moved to Michigan shortly after that time. BURIAL The burial site of Samuel Morris was unknown as of 2022. Of thousands of photos of gravestones in Grant and Dane Counties at the USGenWebArchivesProject, a single gravestone inscribed "Moris" was the only one that could be of Samuel Morris. It was located in Springdale Township of Dane County in the Mt Vernon Cemetery. VERSION #2: RESIDENCE Census 1860 reported that this man, Samuel Morris, and an adolescent, probably his son, Alex, lived together. State of Residence: Wisconsin. By 1862 a Samuel Morris, perhaps this man, had moved to Indiana and enlisted in the Indiana Infantry. PENSION #1 Pension Application (1865) reported that a Samuel Morris was an Invalid (which often meant a Veteran). State of Application: Indiana. #2 Pension Application (1914) reported that Widow, Mary (Ann?), of a Samuel Morris filed (likely shortly after she moved from Indiana to Illinois) for Pension for her husband's Military Service. State of Application: Illinois. RED FLAG: Usually a wife applied for a husband's pension shortly after his death. If so in this case, then the Samuel Morris born in 1808 was not related to Widow Mary. #3 Pension Application (1915) reported that Guardian, Mary (Jane?), of a Samuel Morris filed (likely shortly after her mother's death) for Pension on behalf of Minor (her orphaned nephew). State of Application: Illinois. SUMMARY If the previously described documents apply to one Samuel Morris, and if the relationships were accurate, then Samuel Morris was the husband of Mary Ann and the father of Alexander and of Mary Jane.
