Body found in Willamette Identified
The following was published in Oregon on March 17, 1981, and copied to Terry's Find A Grave memorial:
SALEM - The body of a woman found Sunday in the Willamette River was positively identified Monday as that of Terry Cox Monroe, 21, who had been missing since Feb. 12, police said. Officials said after an autopsy Monday that she had died of "homicidal" asphyxiation."
The Salem woman disappeared from a North Salem tavern last month after she told acquaintances she was stepping outside for some fresh air.
When she didn't return, the acquaintances notified police, who discovered her clothing and identification the next day on a river bank near the tavern. Police and sheriff's deputies combed the river for several days looking for the missing woman.
The body was discovered Sunday by a boater. It was wedged by the current among pilings and debris about three miles from the tavern, Salem Police Lt. Robert Sappingfield said.
It was later determined that she was murdered by William Scott Smith.
