Abner Edward Randall 1866 - 1917

Abner Edward Randall of Melbourne East Australia was born in 1866 in Saint Arnaud, Northern Grampians Shire County, VIC to William White Randall and Rachel Diffey Randall. He had siblings George Diffey Randall, Alfred Moses Randall, Ruth Rachel (Randall) Gonsal, Mary Maria (Randall) Upton, Lydia Cecelia Stephens, and Henry William Randall. He married Mary Ann Lavinia (Stanning) Randall in 1892, and had children Ethel May Randall, Elizabeth Randall Webster, Ruby (Randall) Kellett, and Thomas Abner Randall. Abner Randall died at age 50 years old on April 13, 1917 in Doncaster, City of Manningham County, and was buried at Burwood Cemetery Gilmour St, in Burwood, Whitehorse City County.

In 1866, in the year that Abner Edward Randall was born, on May 10th, the "banker's bank" - London bank Overend, Gurney and Company - collapsed, beginning the Panic of 1866. Unemployment went up to 8% and wages went down. Only about 16% of joint-stock companies - a company whose stock is owned jointly by the shareholders - weathered the Panic.

In 1886, when he was 20 years old, on May 4th, a general strike began in Chicago. Workers were striking for an 8 hour workday and in protest of the killing - by police - of several workers the day before. When an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb, the strike became violent. Seven policemen were killed as well as 4 civilians. It became known as the Haymarket Riot and eventually resulted in an 8 hourwork day as well as commemorations on May 1st for worker's rights.
