Albert Ernest Ebbels 1883 - 1973

Albert Ernest Ebbels of Geelong, Greater Geelong City County, VIC Australia was born in 1883 in Saint Arnaud, Northern Grampians Shire County to Catherine Adelaide Burnett and Edward Philpot Ebbels. He had siblings William John Ebbels, Edward Thomas Ebbels, Henry Alfred Ebbels, Julia Ann Spring Ebbels, Edward Theodore Ebbels, Frederick Ebbels, Benjamin Ebbels, and John Edward Ebbels. He married Catherine Rowlands Ebbels in 1911, and had children Russell Albert Ebbels, Edward Robert Ebbels, Colin Edgar Ebbels, and Gwenda Myrle Ebbels. Albert Ebbels died at age 90 years old in 1973 in Geelong, Greater Geelong City County.

In 1883, in the year that Albert Ernest Ebbels was born, on June 16th, children at a children's variety show in Victoria Hall began rushing the stage area and lobby for promised prizes. In the stampede, 183 children of the 1100 present - most of them 3 to 4 years old - were crushed and asphyxiated.

In 1944, Albert was 61 years old when on June 6th, the largest amphibious invasion in history was launched - the Normandy landing (called D-Day). Soldiers from the United States, Britain, Canada, and the Free French landed on Normandy Beach and were later joined by Poland, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Greece, and the Netherlands. Almost 5,000 landing and assault craft, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers were involved. Nearly 160,000 troops crossed the English Channel on D-Day - Allied casualties on the first day were at least 10,000. 4,414 were confirmed dead.
