Alex Hubert Outhwaite 1877 - 1953

Alex Hubert Outhwaite of Richmond, City of Yarra County, VIC Australia was born in 1877 in Bulleen, City of Manningham County to Robert Outhwaite and Blanche Isabel (Clerk) Outhwaite. He married Phillis Helen (Martin) Outhwaite in 1914, and had children Joan Outhwaite, Margaret Outhwaite, Isla Patience Outhwaite, and Susan Phyllis Outhwaite. Alex Outhwaite died at age 75 years old on May 31, 1953 in Richmond.

In 1877, in the year that Alex Hubert Outhwaite was born, on March 2nd, the U.S. presidential election of 1876 was ended with the selection of Rutherford B. Hayes as the winner. Samuel J. Tilden had won the popular vote in November 1876 but 20 votes in the electoral college were in dispute. An informal agreement was made in which Hayes agreed to remove federal troops from South Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana, ending Reconstruction in the South. So, on March 4th, Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President of the United States.

In 1900, at the age of 23 years old, Alex was alive when a massive hurricane, known as the Great Galveston hurricane, hit Galveston Texas. Winds hit up to 145 miles an hour (category 4) and it remains the single most deadly event in U.S. history. Between 6,000 and 12,000 died (most estimates are around 8,000 dead). The population of Galveston at the time was about 36,000 people in 1900.
