He had siblings Sarah Ann Appleyard, Catherine Appleyard, Margaret Ellen Appleyard, George Alfred Appleyard, Thomas John Appleyard, Harriet Emily Appleyard, James Alexander Appleyard, Florence Louise (Appleyard) Appleyard, Robert Timothy Appleyard, and Timothy William Appleyard. He married Bridget Marnell Appleyard in 1904, and had children Alfred Henry Appleyard, Arnold Joseph Appleyard, Maurice James Appleyard, and Veronica Ella Appleyard. Alfred Appleyard died at age 77 years old on August 1, 1949 in Heidelberg, City of Banyule County.

The Act restored full civil rights to secessionists, including about 150,000 former slaves who had fought in the Confederate Army.
