Alfred Russell Pitt was born on August 20, 1904 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut United States to Marion Edith Perkins and Malcolm Robertson Pitt, and had siblings Margaret Scott (Pitt) Leake, Marion Robertson Pitt, Malcolm Robertson Pitt Jr., Isabel DeForest Pitt, and Edith Perkins Pitt. He married Marian Gillespie Hatch, and had children Christopher Allen Pitt, Alfred Russell Pitt Jr., and Charles Pitt. Alfred Pitt died at age 62 years old on February 7, 1967 in Middlesex County.

In 1904, in the year that Alfred Russell Pitt was born, the "Teddy's Bear" was first produced. After seeing a political cartoon of President Teddy Roosevelt refusing to kill a clubbed and tied up bear, Jewish Russian immigrant Morris Michtom - who owned a candy shop and sold stuffed animals that he and his wife made at night at the store - made a "Teddy's Bear" and put it in his shop's window. The stuffed bears were an immediate success and Michtom and his wife went on to found the Ideal Novelty and Toy Co.

In 1923, by the time he was 19 years old, Harlem's Cotton Club opened in New York City. Owned by a bootlegger and gangster, it was a 700 seat speakeasy that catered to a "white only" clientele. But most of the entertainers were African-American and featured some of the best entertainers of the time such as Lena Horne, the Nicholas Brothers, Ethel Waters, and Cab Calloway.
