Malcolm Robertson Pitt Jr. was born on January 25, 1892 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut United States to Marion Edith Perkins and Malcolm Robertson Pitt, and had siblings Margaret Scott (Pitt) Leake, Marion Robertson Pitt, Isabel DeForest Pitt, Alfred Russell Pitt, and Edith Perkins Pitt. He married Edith Radley, and had children Barbara Pitt, Malcolm Robertson Pitt III, John Radley Pitt, and Alfred Scott Pitt. Malcolm Pitt died at age 86 years old on October 25, 1978 in Old Lyme, New London County.

  • Introduction

    Named after his father, he was known by many friends and relatives as Bud. He graduated from Williams College in 1912 and served in the military during World War 1. He wed twice: 1st on Jan.5,1919 in N.Y.C. to Edith Radley and had 4 children via her. He wed 2nd on Aug.29,1964 in Greenwich, Ct. to Elizabeth Adams Squier, b. May 28,1909 & d. Sept. 1990 in Ct. / no children via her / Bud also had an interest in the Pitt family genealogy & this writer has seen a letter written by him in the 1940s indicating that a serious work should be done in compiling the work before the number of descendants got way too large in number to keep track of. Bud was honored & held in high regard by many and, as far as this writer was concerned, his nephew, Peter Bulkeley Leake, had many of the same traits as Bud.

In 1892, in the year that Malcolm Robertson Pitt Jr. was born, on October 12th, the "Pledge of Allegiance" was first recited in unison by students in U.S. public schools. Composed the previous August by Francis Bellamy, it was to be recited in 15 seconds and originally read: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." "Under God" was added in the 1950's.

In 1913, at the age of 21 years old, Malcolm was alive when Henry Ford installed the first moving assembly line for the mass production of an entire automobile. It had previously taken 12 hours to assemble a whole vehicle - now it took only two hours and 30 minutes! Inspired by the production lines at flour mills, breweries, canneries and industrial bakeries, along with the disassembly of animal carcasses in Chicago’s meat-packing plants, Ford created moving belts for parts and the assembly line was born.
