Aloney Edward Shatraw 1914 - 1981

Aloney Edward Shatraw of Nassau, Rensselaer County, NY was born on August 30, 1914 in Mineville, Essex County to Peter Eli Shatraw and Christie (Villnave) Shatraw. He had siblings Leo Shatraw and Francis Isriel Shatraw. He married Edith Mae Shatraw in 1935, and they were married until death separated them. He had children Lucina Louise (Shatraw) Harris, Robert Edward Shatraw, William Shatraw, Idella Lorene Houle, Wallace E Shatraw, John E Shatraw, Richard Leo Shatraw, and Loma Ann Lasher. Aloney Shatraw died at age 66 years old on March 30, 1981 in Nassau, Rensselaer County, and was buried at Nassau-Schodack Cemetery, in Nassau.

Aloney E. Shatraw married Edith Mae Dumas or Dumaw (1918 - 2006) on December 19th, 1934 in Town of Chateaugay, New York. Alonwy and Edith had eight children: Lucina, Robert, Idella, Wallace, John, Richard, Loma, and one more son. On his October, 1940 World War II draft card, Aloney said that his date of birth was August 31, 1915. All other records, including his headstone, say he was born in 1914. He described himself as being five feet six inches tall and as weighing 152 pounds. He had brown eyes, brown hair, and a "ruddy" complexion.

In 1914, in the year that Aloney Edward Shatraw was born, in August, the Panama Canal opened to traffic. Begun by the French in the 1880's and abandoned, the United States undertook further construction in 1904. After 10 years, and the elimination of malaria carrying mosquitoes (which caused immense delays for the French and the Americans), the 48 mile long artificial waterway - a series of locks - created a shortcut for ships traveling between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
