Andrew Bartholomew Zavotsky 1917 - 1978

Andrew Bartholomew Zavotsky was born on November 2, 1917 in Saxton, Bedford County, Pennsylvania United States to Joseph Zavotsky and Margaret (Gembeca) Zavotsky, and had siblings Catherine (Zavotsky) Hackler, Charles Joseph Zavotsky, John Zavotsky, Paul Peter Zavotsky, Agnes Angelina Holster, and Albert Anthony Zavotsky. He married Katherine Marie Zavotsky on June 26, 1942 in Somerset, Somerset County, NJ, and they were married until Andrew's death on September 11, 1978 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital 1 Robert Wood Johnson Place, in New Brunswick, Middlesex County. He had children Margaret Ann Wilson, Mary Ellen Sudheimer, Katherine Andrea Harris, and Barbara Marie Zavotsky. Andrew Zavotsky was buried on September 16, 1978 in New Brunswick.

In 1917, in the year that Andrew Bartholomew Zavotsky was born, on July 28, between ten and fifteen thousand blacks silently walked down New York City's Fifth Avenue to protest racial discrimination and violence. Lynchings in Waco Texas and hundreds of African-Americans killed in East St. Louis Illinois had sparked the protest. Picket signs said "Mother, do lynchers go to heaven?" "Mr. President, why not make America safe for democracy?" "Thou shalt not kill." "Pray for the Lady Macbeth's of East St. Louis" and "Give us a chance to live."

In 1934, he was 17 years old when on June 6th, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was formed as a response to the stock market crash of 1929 and the continuing Great Depression. Previously, the states regulated the offering and sales of stocks - called "blue sky" laws. They were largely ineffective. Roosevelt created a group (one member was Joseph Kennedy, father of the future President Kennedy) who knew Wall Street well and they defined the mission and operating mode for the SEC. The new organization had broad and stringent rules and oversight and restored public confidence in the stock market in the United States.
