He had siblings William Eagleson Gordon, Emily Mackenzie (Gordon), Robert Aaron Gordon, and Helen Isabel (Gordon). He married Lizzie Maude (Smith) Gordon in 1892, and had children William Hyde Eagleson Gordon, Archibald George Ramsay Gordon, and Edmund Robert Adam Gordon. Archibald Gordon died at age 81 years old on August 12, 1949 at Bridge Of Allan in Bridge of Allan.

  • Introduction

    Archibald Alexander Gordon was the second son of Dr William Eagleson Gordon and Emily Maryann Dick. He was the youngest brother of Victoria Cross recipient William Eagleson Gordon Jr, halfbrother to George Freer Jr, older brother to Robert Aaron Gordon and brother to his sisters Emily Mackenzie Gordon (married Black) and Helen Isabelle Gordon (married Nicholson). He was the father of William Hyde Eagleson Gordon, who died during the Battle of Loos on September 30, 1915, Archibald George Ramsay Gordon, who died in his infancy and Edmund Robert Adam Gordon, who became wounded in the First World War and later died as a result of TBC in 1932. Archibald Gordon's legacy was passed down to his cousin Ronald Eagleson Gordon, who ensured that it would be preserved. During his lifetime Archibald A. Gordon held many esteemed positions, including Honorary Secretary of the Franco-Scottish Society (1895-1906), member of the Royal Company of Archers (1896 onwards), Co-founder of the 9th Royal Scots (1900-1906), Private Secretary to the 4th Duke of Wellington (1906-1920), Organiser of the Belgian Relief Fund (1914-1915) and Belgian King's Messenger (1914-1922). He also participated in preserving the mosaics of the Church of the Multiplication at Tabgha (Israel). In 1939 he wrote his memoirs, published in 1941 under the title "Culled from a Diary".

  • Military Service

    Archibald A. Gordon served as Colonel Jack Seely's, the late Lord Mottistone, Orderly Officer in the Siege of Antwerp 1914. Here he surveyed the frontlines and reported to the British and Belgian Headquarters. During the siege, he evacuated the city's hospitals with a column of London omnibuses. For this action, he was later awarded by King Albert I of Belgium and listed as "Scottish hero of Antwerp Bombardement'" in the Edinburgh Evening Post in 1916. Subsequently, he led a column of British Marine forces through the city after the massive evacuation was ordered to Bruges and Ostend. By the end of 1914, he became Belgian Kings Messenger to the King and Queen of the Belgians, who he had met in Antwerp during his days as the organiser of the Belgian Relief Fund. Here he was given the nickname "Major Gordon", which stuck with him for the rest of his life. Major Gordon served the King and Queen until 1922. He participated in many non-combat missions like the establishment of the hospital L'Océan at La Panne as well as the protestant Chapel St. Ninians for the Devine service for British soldiers overseas. He escorted many honourable persons to the front, including Mrs Margot Asquith, Lord Curzon of Keddleston, his boss, the 4th Duke of Wellington, the princes of Bourbon-Parma, Eugéne Ysaÿe and many others. During the war, he lost his oldest son William Hyde Eagleson Gordon, during the Battle of Loos on September 30, 1915. His youngest son Edmund Robert Adam Gordon died after recovering from an illness and being wounded - resulting in the amputation of a part of his hand and several fingers - and eventually suffering from TBC. He succumbed to this disease in 1932, the last heir of Major Gordon's family.

    Archibald held many esteemed positions during his life. Honorary Secretary for the Franco-Scottish Society (1895-1906) Fundraiser for the Scottish National Monument for Queen Victoria - the Queen Victoria School in Dunblane - a position he awarded the MVO (member of the Victorion Order) for. Private Secretary to the 4th Duke of Wellington (1906-1920)

    Major Gordon died peacefully on August 12, 1949, while paying his youngest sister Helen (Nicholson) a visit. He was brought back to his hometown of Bridge of Allan, where a ceremony was held. Major Gordon was buried next to his wife Maude in Logie Cemetery. Here he finds his quiet rest near the grave of his father (who he lost at the age of 6), his mother and his younger sister Emily (Black).

Today, April 6th 2021, is National Tartan Day in the United States. A day to honor those people with Scottish roots. Meet Archibald Alexander Gordon, who lived from 1867-1949 in Scotland. That's full dress!
He is wearing several medals that might be the Germinn “Por Le Merit”, a French “Croix De Guerre” the British Military Cross and around his neck a possible Victoria Cross. There should be lists of theses recipients and the reasons they were given.
