    Arthur Edward Pethybridge was born on August 20, 1924 in Leominster, Massachusetts, USA to parents Clarence Edward Pethybridge (1889-1966) and Marion Hortense Firmin (1886-1967). He grew up in Fitchburg, Worcester, Massachusetts with his brother, Donald Firmin Pethybridge (1917-2012). Arthur enlisted on April 8, 1943 in Fort Devens Massachusetts and served four years in the U.S. Army in Europe. He was in service from April 8, 1943 until December. 3, 1945 and was a veteran of World War II. On August 26, 1950 he married Dorothy King (1924-2011) in Cook, Illinois, United States. They had children including John King Pethybridge (1954-2000) and Richard Pethybridge. Arthur worked as a librarian for many years working in libraries in Providence, Rhode Island, Racine, Wisconsin, and working for ten years at the Glastonbury High School. He was also the Director of the Northwestern Connecticut Community College from the founding of the college in 1965 until his retirement in 1987. He played the flute, recorder, violin and guitar as well as sang in his church choir.

He also particularly enjoyed attending the concerts at Tanglewood many times each summer for over thirty years, and he felt privileged to be a member of the Connecticut Opera Chorus for seven years. He also liked to draw and paint and belonged to various art groups over the years. During his retirement he was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and for Connecticut Public Radio.

    MANCHESTER — Arthur E. Pethybridge, 85 of Manchester and formerly of Winsted, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009 at Manchester Manor with his family by his side. Born Aug. 20, 1924 in Leominster, Mass., the son of Marion (Firmin) and Clarence Pethybridge, he grew up in Fitchburg, Mass. He and his wife, Dorothy (King) Pethybridge, were married on Aug. 26, 1950 in River Forest, Ill. A graduate of Boston University and Simmons College of Library Science, he also attended other universities in this country and England. A librarian for many years, he had worked in libraries in Providence, R.I. and Racine, Wisc., and for ten years at the Glastonbury High School. He was the Director of the Northwestern Connecticut Community College from the founding of the college in 1965 until his retirement in 1987. He had been a member and officer in several library organizations and had published in the library field. He truly loved the "hurly-burly' of library work! He was a veteran of World War II, serving four years in the U.S. Army in Europe. Wherever he lived, he thoroughly enjoyed being a member of amateur musical groups, playing flute, recorder, violin and guitar. For ten years he reviewed classical music concerts for the Berkshire Eagle and papers in northwestern Connecticut. He sang in church choirs for much of his life, and most recently was a member of Manchester's "Beethoven Chorus". Besides his wife, Dorothy, he is survived by a son, Richard Pethybridge and his wife Cheryl of East Hampton, four grandchildren, Sarah and Jenna Pethybridge of East Hampton, Christina Rausch and her husband Justin of Modest, Calif., and Roger Pethybridge and his wife Rebecca of Ceres, Calif., three great-grandchildren, Justin, Trinity, and Alahna Rausch of Modesto, Calif., a brother, Donald Pethybridge of Farmington, and a niece and nephew. He is predeceased by a son, John Pethybridge of Ceres, Calif. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at Grove Hill Cemetery in Rockville. There are no calling hours. Memorial contributions may be made either to Northwestern Connecticut Community College, Park Place, Winsted, CT 06098, or to the Hospice Program, Visiting Nurse and Health Services of Connecticut, 8 Keynote Drive, Vernon, CT 06066. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Manchester Manor and Hospice for their care and support during the past year. The Watkins Funeral Home in Manchester is assisting with arrangements.

In 1924, in the year that Arthur Edward Pethybridge was born, in May, wealthy college students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb kidnapped and killed 14 year old Robert Franks "in the interest of science". Leopold and Loeb thought that they were intellectually superior and that they could commit the perfect crime and not be caught. They were brought in for questioning within 8 days and quickly confessed. Clarence Darrow was hired as their defense lawyer, getting them life imprisonment instead of a death sentence. Loeb was eventually killed in prison - Leopold was released after 33 years, dying of a heart attack at age 66.

In 1937, at the age of just 13 years old, Arthur was alive when on May 6th, the German zeppelin the Hindenburg caught fire and blew up. The Hindenburg was a passenger ship traveling to Frankfurt Germany. It tried to dock in New Jersey, one of the stops, and something went wrong - it blew up. Thirty-six people were killed out of the 97 on board - 13 passengers, 22 crewmen, and one ground worker. The reasons for the explosion are still disputed.
