Arthur Valentine Baker of Footscray Australia was born in 1898 in Aireys Inlet, Victoria to Richard Joye Baker and Honora (Curtis) Baker. He had siblings Albert Otway Baker, Ernest Frank Baker, Queenie Norah Cliffy (Baker) Graham, Adelaide Catherine (Baker) Noyes, Annie Joye (Baker) Griffith, Beryl Floris Doreen (Baker) Cameron, and Richard Joye Benjamin Baker. He married Catherine Frances (Nye) Baker, and had children Arthur Gordon Baker and Charles Valentine Baker. Arthur Baker died at age 82 years old on August 26, 1981 in Footscray, VIC, and was buried on August 28, 1981 in Altona Memorial Park.

In 1898, in the year that Arthur Valentine Baker was born, on March 24th, Robert Allison of Pennsylvania became the first person to buy an American-built car. He bought a Winton, which he had seen in an advertisement in Scientific American. The Winton, built in Ohio, was made by hand and came with a leather roof, padded seats, gas lamps, and tires made by B.F. Goodrich.
