Albert Otway Baker 1894 - 1963

Albert Otway Baker of Caulfield Australia was born in 1894 at Cape Otway Lighthouse in Cape Otway, Victoria to Richard Joye Baker and Honora (Curtis) Baker. He had siblings Arthur Valentine Baker, Ernest Frank Baker, Queenie Norah Cliffy (Baker) Graham, Adelaide Catherine (Baker) Noyes, Annie Joye (Baker) Griffith, Beryl Floris Doreen (Baker) Cameron, and Richard Joye Benjamin Baker. He married Mary Annie (Smith) Baker, and had children Laurence Richard Baker, Mary "Claire" (Baker) Kemp, and Richard Baker. Albert Baker died at age 68 years old on August 29, 1963 in Caulfield, and was buried at Brighton General Cemetery in Caulfield South, Glen Eira City County, VIC.

    Joined 20th August 1914 at age 20, Lance Corporal, Military Post Office Corps ( later transferred to Ordnance Corps). Unit embarked from Melbourne on board Transport A3 Orvieto on 21st October 1914. Promoted to Staff Sergeant 1st September 1915. Embarked from Alexandria on board Euripedes for England on 11 May 1916. Promoted to Warrant Officer 23 August 1916. Accidentally Injured left foot in France 4 September 1916, when truck ran over it. Embarked for England, 9 September 1916 onboard HMHS Lanfranc, hospital ship, ( which was sunk by a German U- boat on 17 April 1917.) Admitted to hospital 13 January 1917, with VD. AWOL 29 August 1917 docked 1 day's pay. Contracted rheumatic fever, left England for Australia on 27 September 1917, onboard the Suevic.

BAKER.- On August 29, at his residence, Teak street, South Caulfield, Albert Otway Baker, dearly beloved husband of Mary, and loving father of Laurie, Dick, Claire ( Mrs. Kemp ), and father-in-law of Lauris, Neville and Laurel, dear grandfather of Lucille, Karen and Alan. Rest In peace.
