Benjamin Hockett was born in 1772 to Anthony Hockett and Mary Agnes Hockett, and had siblings Samuel Hockett, Agness Harvey, Jonathan Hockett, David Hockett, Moses Hockett, and Joseph Hockett. Benjamin Hockett died at age 93 years old in 1865.

In 1800, Benjamin was 28 years old when on August 30th, educated blacksmith Gabriel Prosser organized a slave revolt. He wanted to capture Richmond and kill all whites - excluding Methodists, Quakers, Frenchmen, and the poor - and become king of a new black nation. The revolt failed, he was captured and hung. Slave laws were tightened in Virginia.

In 1811, at the age of 39 years old, Benjamin was alive when on December 16th, the New Madrid earthquake - in the Mississippi Valley near the city of New Madrid, Missouri - temporarily reversed the course of the Mississippi River. The quake is estimated to have been 7.5 - 7.9. Other large earthquakes along the fault occurred on January 23rd and February 7th, 1812. These quakes were the largest ever recorded east of the Rockies.
